The Technique

When most students arrive at my studio for their first singing lesson they are nervous and have little or no idea how the voice works. Some people are born natural singers but for those of you who are not, it IS a reality that you can learn how to use your voice to it’s full potential.

In the early days of my singing career, I incorrectly thought that I had a low voice, as I found high notes uncomfortable to sing. I could get away with them but my voice would always feel tired. When I began studying my voice I realised that I had been singing in chest (see chest voice) continuously even as I tried to sing high notes. This put a strain on my vocal chords and resulted in me thinking I could just not sing high. How wrong I was! I discovered that to sing high you have to use a different part of your voice, the middle voice (see middle Voice). This register allows you to sing an octave or two above chest in a strong tone that resembles the quality of chest. Hooray I could sing high! I just had to realise and learn what was happening in my larynx and how to allow my voice to do it’s thing without getting in the way, trying too hard and causing tension-a singers worst enemy.

The speech level singing technique gives you specific exercises to help you over come your particular problem, be it straining, being breathy, cracks and breaks in your voice, having no power or all of the above. Under my guidance, we can teach your larynx to stay in a neutral position which will allow your voice to work to it’s full potential. Whilst studying this technique you will learn to sing through your entire natural range of pitch at a variety of dynamic levels without any breaks or strain.
